It can stay there for several years. A coil protects against pregnancy. A hormonal coil prevents pregnancy for 5, 6 or 8 years. This depends on the brand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>2.<strong> IUD (Intrauterine Device \u2013 a coil):&nbsp;<\/strong>the IUD contains copper and that stops you getting pregnant. An IUD doesn\u2019t contain any hormones. It prevents pregnancy for 5-10 years. This depends on the brand.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>In theory, a coil is just as reliable as the pill. But actually, the coil is more reliable, because you don\u2019t have to think about it all the time. That\u2019s what makes the pill slightly less reliable, having to remember to take it every day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_92d8ff-80 .kt-block-spacer{height:60px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_92d8ff-80 .kt-divider{border-top-width:1px;height:1px;border-top-color:#eee;width:80%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-1249_92d8ff-80\">\n<div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\">\n<hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Are there any side effects?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With an&nbsp;<strong>IUD<\/strong>, your period might be a bit more painful. You may also bleed slightly more.<\/p>\n<p>When you first have an&nbsp;<strong>IUS<\/strong>, your body has to get used to the hormones the coil contains. Possible side effects of the hormones are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>irregular blood loss<\/li>\n<li>headaches<\/li>\n<li>acne<\/li>\n<li>hair loss<\/li>\n<li>painful breasts<\/li>\n<li>low moods<\/li>\n<li>weight gain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Usually, the side effects disappear after a couple of months. They will insert the coil into your uterus<\/li>\n<li>You can leave the coil in place for 5-10 years, depending on your choice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_d00651-16 .kt-block-spacer{height:60px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_d00651-16 .kt-divider{border-top-width:1px;height:1px;border-top-color:#eee;width:80%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-1249_d00651-16\">\n<div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\">\n<hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Advantages and disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Both:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Very reliable: you can\u2019t forget a coil like you can forget the pill<\/li>\n<li>You only need to think about it once every 5-10 years<\/li>\n<li>A coil is even reliable if you vomit or have diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Nobody can tell that you are using contraception<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>IUS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your period is usually shorter, lighter and less painful. Sometimes your periods stop completely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>IUD:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you do not want to take hormones, a coil that releases copper is a good option<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Both:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A doctor has to insert it<\/li>\n<li>Insertion can be a bit painful<\/li>\n<li>Some women have side effects<\/li>\n<li>You can\u2019t plan or postpone your period with a coil<\/li>\n<li>A coil does not protect against STIs<\/li>\n<li>If you use a menstrual cup, you\u2019ll need to release the vacuum before you take it out of your vagina. Otherwise, the coil might come out too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>IUS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may have irregular bleeding or spotting<\/li>\n<li>Some women have side effects from the hormones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>IUD:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your period might be more painful and you may also have slightly more bleeding than before you had the coil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_373422-0f .kt-block-spacer{height:60px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_373422-0f .kt-divider{border-top-width:1px;height:1px;border-top-color:#eee;width:80%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-1249_373422-0f\">\n<div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\">\n<hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Where can you get a coil?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>Your general practitioner can place an IUS or IUD. Alternatively, you can make an appointment at <a href=\"https:\/\/famiaplaniacuracao.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fundashon Famia Plania<\/a>. Usually, you will be asked to return for a follow-up appointment 4-6 weeks later. This is to check that the coil is still in the correct position. Use your finger to check whether you can feel the threads. Take care not to pull on the threads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not sure if you can feel them?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then use condoms for sex, just in case, and make an appointment to see your doctor,&nbsp;so that they can check the coil for you. Also arrange to see your doctor if you have a coil and get unexpected, heavy bleeds.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful when using a menstrual cup! Because the cup sucks in to your cervix, you could pull out an IUD\/IUS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Squeeze the tip of the cup so it is no longer sucked in. Or put your finger between the cup and your cervix. Always check the cup before cleaning it.<\/p>\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_7ea565-4e .kt-block-spacer{height:60px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-1249_7ea565-4e .kt-divider{border-top-width:1px;height:1px;border-top-color:#eee;width:80%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-1249_7ea565-4e\">\n<div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\">\n<hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>When do you run the risk of pregnancy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you were too late getting a new coil inserted (how often you have to do that depends on the type of IUS or IUD &#8211; it may be 5 or 10 years)<\/li>\n<li>If you have abdominal pain, but haven\u2019t had your coil checked. Very rarely, an IUS or IUD is rejected by your uterus.
