What are boundaries?

What are boundaries?

Boundaries are the limits or rules you set for yourself and others to make sure you feel safe, comfortable, and respected. They help you decide what you are okay with and what you are not okay with in different situations. Boundaries can be physical, emotional, or even digital. Your boundaries will vary between people. For example, the boundaries you have in place for a stranger, or an acquaintance may be different to your boundaries for a friend or family member.

Types of boundaries

1. Physical boundaries: These involve your personal space and body.

For example:

  • Deciding if you’re comfortable with hugs or a kiss.
  • Letting others know if you don’t want to be touched in a certain way.

2. Emotional boundaries: These protect your feelings and thoughts.

For example:

  • Saying “I don’t want to talk about that right now” if a topic makes you uncomfortable.
  • Asking people to respect your feelings or opinions.

3. Digital boundaries: These involve how you use technology, like social media.

For example:

  • Deciding who can follow or message you online.
  • Letting others know if you don’t want your pictures shared without permission.

Why are boundaries important?

  • They keep you safe: Boundaries help protect you from situations that make you feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
  • They build healthy relationships: When people respect your boundaries, it shows they care about your feelings.
  • They teach respect: Setting boundaries helps others understand how you want to be treated, and it also teaches you to respect their boundaries.

Culture and boundaries

Many of us grow up without learning that we have the right to set boundaries around physical touch, even with family members. This can make it harder to establish personal limits later in life and may create an environment where children feel pressured to accept physical interactions that make them uncomfortable.

Be aware that you can say no and you can also talk about your boundaries and reflect on this uncomfortable feeling with your family and friends.

How to set boundaries

  • Be clear: Say what you’re comfortable with and what you’re not. For example, “Please don’t hug me without asking.”
  • Use “I” Statements: This helps express your feelings without blaming anyone. For example, “I feel uncomfortable when…”
  • Stay firm: If someone doesn’t respect your boundary, it’s okay to repeat it or remove yourself from the situation.

Remember!

It’s okay to have boundaries, and you deserve to have them respected. If someone crosses your boundaries, talk to a trusted adult, like a parent, teacher, or school social worker. There are also support organizations that can offer guidance such as Bos di Hubentut or Ayudo pa Mucha i Hóben.
