What is a healthy relationship?

It can be hard to know what makes a relationship healthy, especially when you’re still learning about yourself and others. A healthy relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and communication. It’s about both people feeling valued, supported, and cared for.

Here’s what to look for in a healthy relationship: 10 tips

  1. Respect: In a healthy relationship, both people respect each other’s feelings, boundaries, and individuality. You both listen to each other, even when you disagree, and value each other’s opinions and choices.
  2. Trust: Trust is key. You should feel comfortable being yourself without fear of judgment or dishonesty. Trust means being open and honest and knowing that your partner has your best interests at heart.
  3. Communication: Healthy communication is about openly talking with each other, sharing your thoughts, and listening without interrupting. If something is bothering you, it’s important to speak up, and it’s equally important to be receptive when your partner shares.
  4. Support: A healthy relationship is one where both people encourage each other to grow, pursue their goals, and be their best selves. Support means lifting each other up, both emotionally and practically.
  5. Boundaries: Healthy relationships respect personal boundaries. It’s important to have space to be yourself, do things independently, and feel comfortable saying “no” when something doesn’t feel right.
  6. Equality: In a healthy relationship, both partners are equal. You share responsibilities, decisions, and power. No one should dominate or control the other.
  7. Kindness and care: Kindness goes a long way. In a healthy relationship, you treat each other with care, compassion, and patience, especially during tough times.
  8. Independence: Even in close relationships, it’s important to maintain your independence. Healthy relationships allow both partners to pursue their own interests, friendships, and goals outside of the relationship.
  9. Fun and laughter: Relationships should be enjoyable! While not every moment is fun, sharing laughter and enjoying each other’s company is an important part of a healthy dynamic.
  10. Conflict resolution: Disagreements happen. In a healthy relationship, you both work through problems together in a respectful and non-violent way. It’s about finding solutions and learning from the conflict, not avoiding or fighting about it.
