When you’re young, you might fantasize about someone you like. That could be a boy, a girl, or someone of another gender. Who do you find yourself attracted to? Who do you have fantasies about? Or maybe you’re just not sure yet who you’re drawn to, and that’s okay too.

What is what?

  • Gay: You mostly or always feel romantic or sexual attraction toward people of the same or a similar gender as your own.
  • Lesbian: You are someone who mostly or always feels romantic or sexual attraction toward women.
  • Bi: You feel romantic or sexual attraction toward people of multiple genders.
  • Straight: You mostly or always feel romantic or sexual attraction toward people of a different gender than your own.

Did you know? 

  • The first known gay activist group in Curaçao, Sociedad Homosexual Antiyano Biba Larga Biba (SHA), emerged in the 1970s. They used press releases to advocate for equal treatment and total emancipation of homosexuals.
  • Cross-dressing in public used to be illegal. In 1983, the ban on transvestism was lifted in the Netherlands. In Curaçao, too, boys and men are now allowed to dress as girls or women in public.
  • The first Curaçao Gay Pride was held in 2012. The week-long event is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship to show how far LGBT- rights have come.
    Four years later, in 2016, the initial Pride Walk occurred. Nowadays, it is the flagship event of the Curaçao Pride. 
  • On July 12, 2024, the supreme court of the Netherlands ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in Curaçao, upholding a decision against discrimination based on sexual orientation. 
    The first same-sex marriage, between two women, took place on July 27, 2024.
