When you find out

When you find out

Not everyone is happy being sexually diverse. It can be very confusing. Perhaps you feel like you are the only one. It can be good to know you’re not the only one. Find people you can talk to about it, and who know how you feel.

What can you do?

  • Read personal experience stories by young people who are already openly gay, lesbian or bisexual. It’s good to read about how other people deal with it.
  • Talk to people you trust and who you feel comfortable with.
  • Connect with people online who are experiencing something similar.
  • Reach out to support groups like Curaçao Pride and FOKO.

Embracing yourself

The world often assumes people are straight. However, discovering and embracing your own identity is a beautiful journey. If you grew up in a household or community where being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or otherwise wasn’t openly celebrated, it’s important to know that your feelings are valid.

The rainbow shines brightly because it’s made up of so many unique and vibrant colors, just like people. Everyone has their own path, and yours is just as important and valuable. You matter, and your uniqueness is something to celebrate.

Be true to yourself

Staying true to yourself can be challenging, especially in communities that may not fully support or celebrate lesbian, gay, or bisexual identities, but always remember:

  • There are lesbian, gay and bisexual people all over the world.
  • Being lesbian, gay or bisexual doesn’t make you one of nature’s mistakes. Same-sex behavior is fairly common in the natural world. It has been reported in over 1500 animal species, including insects, fish and mammals.
  • Religious people may reject homosexuality, but that doesn’t apply to everyone who is religious. Persons attitudes towards gay, lesbian and bi people often differ within a single religion.
  • Lesbian, gay, and bisexual people are just as diverse as anyone else. Some may express themselves in more traditionally feminine or masculine ways, just like people of any orientation. Everyone is unique, and the most important thing is to embrace who you are.
